eSlide::Suite (v2.0a, 20091111)

eSlide::Suite is a set of tools for acquisition, preparation and visualization of digital slides. It is being released for free.

V2.0 has been an effort to enhance the quality of acquisition and also towards the development of a fully web-based viewer. Due to shortage of funding, development is partly in stand-by, although we will release very soon all v2.0 code.

The Suite is composed by the software modules needed for dealing with digital slides:

eSlide::Pyramid: pyramid construction starting from the acquired images;
eSlide::Scope: eSlide viewer, acting either as full application or applet.
New: eSlide::Web: fully web-base eSlide viewer (preview)

eSlide::Suite (v0.9a, 20060629)

eSlide::Suite is a set of tools for acquisition, preparation and visualization of digital slides. It is being released for free, as is, but in the near future also sources will be made available.

The Suite is composed by the software modules needed for dealing with digital slides:

eSlide::Acquisition: acquisition of digital slides through a robotic microscope and a camera;
eSlide::Pyramid: pyramid construction starting from the acquired images;
eSlide::Scope: eSlide viewer, acting either as full application or applet.

Hardware supported

The eSlide::Scope and eSlide::Pyramid tools can be run on any Java supporting system, including Windows, Linux and MacOSX. eSlide::Acquisition, due to the need for acquisition drivers, can be run in principle only on Windows and MacOSX, although it has been fully tested only on Windows XP.

UPDATE (20060801): a successful test has been made also on MacOSX 10.4.7, on a PB12" and a G5 DP 2.5GHz.

At present, this preliminary release (v0.9a, 20060629) is very limited in the kind of acquisition hardware supported:

image acquisition can be done just with a Scion camera;
two motorized stages are supported: Märzhäuser LSTEP and Prior Optiscan.

Stage compatibility depends upon our previously released IJStage software, so as soon as other plugins will be available, they will be included also in the suite.

Roadmap

Many improvements have been foreseen for the eSlide::Suite:

slide preview with manual area selection;
support for Quicktime cameras (including VfW and WDM cameras under Windows);
support for Java Media Framework video sources (to make the system compatible with Linux);
release of sources under the Open Source principle.
